About The DXL Frisco Bowl: Game Notes

Former Conference Mates: Louisiana Tech and SMU were both members of the WAC from 2001-04. The DXL Frisco Bowl is one of five bowls this year matching former members of the same conference. Here are the others:

  • Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl matches former Big West and WAC members New Mexico State (now Sun Belt) and Utah State (now Mountain West)
  • Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl matches former Big 12 rivals Texas and Missouri (now SEC)
  • R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl matches former Sun Belt rivals Troy and North Texas (now C-USA)
  • Raycom Media Camellia Bowl matches former Sun Belt rivals Arkansas State and MTSU (now C-USA)

Louisiana Tech in Bowls in Texas: The Bulldogs are 2-0 playing in bowl games in Texas, beating Illinois in the 2014 Heart of Dallas Bowl and Navy in the 2016 Armed Forces Bowl.

SMU in Bowls in Texas: The Mustangs are 3-4-1 in eight bowl games in the state of Texas, most recently a 16-14 loss to Army in the 2010 Armed Forces Bowl, which was played at Ford Stadium on the SMU campus. The Mustangs last win in a Texas bowl was a 7-3 triumph over Pittsburgh in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1, 1983, to preserve SMU’s undefeated season (10-0-1).

Stadium Kicks: The DXL Frisco Bowl is one of four bowl games set to be played at the home stadium of a Major League Soccer team (FC Dallas plays at Toyota Stadium). Yankee Stadium (NYCFC) hosts the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, and Mercedes Benz Stadium (Atlanta United) hosts both the Celebration Bowl and Chick-fil-a Peach Bowl (plus the CFP National Championship Game).
